Who is Sandra?

Sandra (Sandy) O’Brien was born in Cleveland, Ohio.  Her family moved to Geauga County as she entered her high school years.  Sandra graduated from Kenston High School and continued her education at Bowling Green State University.  She majored in elementary education and graduated cum laude with her teaching certificate. She then married her high school sweetheart, Patrick.  She started her teaching career before the birth of their  four children, Casey, Colleen, Connor and Corey.  Sandra was a stay-at-home mother for eleven years volunteering for various organizations such as the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau, the Ohio State Extension Board and was a spokesperson for the American Soybean Association.

During these years Sandra also managed to attend  Edinboro  University where she received a Master’s Degree in School Administration.   With her youngest child in school, Sandra resumed her teaching career where she taught junior high in the Ashtabula Area City School District.  She added to her educational credentials by becoming an adjunct professor at Lakeland Community College in Mentor.

In 1994 Sandra took the plunge into the world of politics.  She ran for and was elected Ashtabula County Auditor, defeating a twenty year incumbent, personally knocking on doors all across the county.  She was reelected in 1998 and once again in 2002, serving a total of 12 years in office.  She received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers’ Association each year, the Outstanding Auditor’s Award in 1998 and also served as President of the Northeast Ohio Auditors’ Association.  In 2005 Sandra led a successful referendum to defeat a county sales tax increase garnering 78% of the vote.

In 2006 Sandra decided to seek state office and entered the Primary for State Treasurer against the sitting incumbent.  Although being outspent by her opponent by a five- to- one margin, she was victorious. Although she garnered 1.5 million votes in the general election, she was defeated in her quest for the office.
